Committees

The Meat Institute is governed by a Board of Directors and an Executive Committee that receive recommendations and technical guidance from committees. These committees convene regularly to share information and strategies around key areas. Involvement is open to all members.

Animal Welfare Committee

Monitors and analyzes animal handling and animal welfare policy initiatives and develops animal handling industry guidelines and training initiatives.

Communications and Marketing Committee

Serves as a member-driven resource to guide the development of Meat Institute communications strategy including media and public outreach. Leads consumer education, public affairs and marketing initiatives conducted by the Meat Institute on behalf of the meat and poultry industry.

Cybersecurity Committee

The committee is a strategic community of knowledgeable individuals that collaborate to share information germane to cybersecurity; identify and develop cybersecurity resources for all members; and monitor and analyze cybersecurity policy initiatives. Committee members agree to the member expectations outlined in the Committee Goals & Structure.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee

The DEI Committee is comprised of individuals from member companies responsible for or interested in advancing greater diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in their organization. Fosters education and training to increase personal understanding of topics such as DEI, unconscious bias, and power and privilege. Encourages best practices of how individuals can implement DEI initiatives in their organizations and a place for members to share what is working well. Best practice topics may include organizational structures such as an internal diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, employee resource groups, how to eliminate bias in your hiring practices, metrics collection, increasing leadership level buy in, and how to foster an inclusive culture.

Environmental Affairs Advisory Committee

Encourages and assists member companies in complying with environmental laws and regulations; promotes the adoption of environmental management systems and other stewardship initiatives to minimize the impact of the meat and poultry processing industry on the environment; addresses the industry's policy interests before the federal government to promote the development of sound environmental regulations.

Food Safety and Inspection Affairs Committee

Develops actions, recommends policy and provides support and resources on food safety and inspection issues.

Food Security Committee

The purpose of the committee is to bring members together to share best practices and opportunities related to charitable giving, hunger relief and food security. The ideal participants are members who play a role in the charitable giving efforts of a company or for members who want to learn more about how to better organize giving within their companies.

Health and Wellness Advisory Committee

The scientific forum comprised of the nutrition, scientific or technical experts who evaluate diet, health and wellness issues that affect Meat Institute members.

International Affairs Committee

Monitors issues related to the import and export of meat and poultry products.

Labor and Employment Committee

Outlines and develops educational resources to address the challenges of human resources professionals in the meat and poultry industry; addresses issues involving employment policy, wages, worker retention and immigration policy.

Legal Committee

The Meat Institute legal committee is an opportunity for legal professionals at member companies to interact with their counterparts and share information and best practices. The committee is a voluntary opportunity to receive targeted information about legal activities in the industry, as well as the opportunity for members to provide insights, perspectives and recommendations about the Meat Institute’s activities on certain legal issues. Examples of these discussions and updates will include topics such as the AMS publication of another final P&S rule, the EPA’s ELG proposed rules. The committee will develop self-guiding principles around involvement in litigation. We expect to meet on regular intervals, including online and in person opportunities as needed. Participation in these in person meetings is not required to be eligible to participate.

Scientific Affairs Advisory Committee

Evaluates scientific issues that have potential for impact on the meat and poultry industry; provides scientific recommendations that support Meat Institute’s regulatory, public affairs and lobbying efforts.

Worker Safety and Health Committee

Fosters continuous improvement in worker and workplace safety in the meat industry; addresses workplace occupational safety and health issues, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulatory matters; plans and conducts the annual Conference on Worker Safety and the Meat Institute-National Safety Council Safety Awards Program.
